My brother and his journey of recovery: part one
Produced by Ilke Alexander
This project contains adult language.
My brother, Jarryd, is a recovering drug addict. He is a bright, 20-year old who comes from a stable, supportive and well-off family. His journey is an interesting one to me because he does not fit the typical profile of someone who would go off the rails in the way he did (at least in South Africa)…As it turned out, he had been using drugs for a few years, and the most difficult period of his addiction (for both him and us as a family) was during 2019. I was mostly in the U.S. during this time but spent many hours on the phone trying to mediate between my parents and my brother. The situation back home was tense, stressful and deeply concerning, and while I worried about my brother everyday, I experienced most of it as an observer. This is my attempt to understand what it was like for him and the reasons why he turned to drugs in the way he did.
This audio profile is only the first of two episodes, the second of which will be submitted as part of my final project.
