Southern California firefighter dies after being hit on bike
A Southern California fire captain has died after being struck by a vehicle during a weekend bicycle ride.
Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue says in a Twitter posting that Mike Kreza died early this morning.
The 18-year veteran was off duty when he was struck by a van Saturday morning in Mission Viejo.
The Orange County Register reports Kreza was found lying in the road unresponsive with visible head and body trauma.
The van driver stayed at the scene and investigators determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the collision.
The newspaper reports 25-year-old Stephen Scarpa could face charges including DUI.
Kreza was married with children.
Police officers, firefighters, sheriff's deputies and members of the public had turned out for a candlelight vigil for Kreza.
