Ex-skateboard champion could get parole in 1991 rape-murder

A California panel has recommended parole for a 1980s skateboard champion who confessed to raping and killing a woman at his Carlsbad home in 1991. KGTV-TV reports the panel made the recommendation for Mark "Gator" Rogowski, who's served 27 years behind bars. The recommendation would need to be finalized before it can go to the governor for review. Rogoswki pleaded guilty to beating, raping and strangling 22-year-old Jessica Bergsten, then burying her in the desert. Rogowski called it "misplaced revenge" because Bergsten was a friend of Rogowski's girlfriend, who had dumped him. Bergsten's father and prosecutors say Rogowski shouldn't be freed.
