Rancho Santa Margarita may cite street sweeper violators

The Rancho Santa Margarita City Council tonight may approve a street sweeping resolution imposing fines for those who leave their cars on streets during posted street sweeping times.

Mayor Jerry Holloway says voluntary compliance isn’t working in the city. And the fines would be issued for those who park on 14 streets, 13 of which are main arterial streets and one is residential.

He says having clean streets is important especially with the recent rains to reduce the trash, sediment and debris that makes its way to the ocean.

Holloway says if the Council approves the resolution, there would be a 60 day grace period to allow for signage and warnings.

The fines would be 50 dollars for the first violation, 100 dollars for the second citation and 200 dollars for the third violation within a 12 month period.

Tonight’s City Council meeting begins at seven.
