Los Angeles mayor promotes aggressive sustainability goals

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is promoting aggressive environmental goals for the nation's second-largest city.

Among other things, the plan envisions the percentage of electric or zero-emission vehicles in the city rising to 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2050.

The Los Angeles Times reports the mayor's office hopes to reduce driving by residents from an average of 15 miles a day to nine miles by 2035.

Among a wide range of initiatives, all new buildings constructed in the city would be "net-zero carbon" by 2030, and every building in the city would be converted to zero-emission technologies by 2050.

While it's unclear how such goals could be reached, Garcetti says he hopes to build such a strong coalition that mayor after mayor can accelerate them forward.
