San Clemente will close transitional homeless camping site

The San Clemente City Council has agreed to close its temporary transitional homeless camping site a week from today.

Mayor Pro-tem Laura Ferguson says the Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday to determine what options it will select for the homeless.

She says under federal law people experiencing homelessness have a right to sleep in public places, if there's no available shelter.

Ferguson says options before the Council include working with Social Service non-profits to return the homeless to their families or friends; giving the homeless vouchers for hotels; or set up another campsite for them.

She says the city owned site had cost the city about $31 thousand a month.

Tuesday’s Council meeting begins at six in the evening.
