How YouTube decides what to ban
The leader of YouTube's trust and safety team says he has to balance safety and civility with what the company considers a core mission: freedom of expression. The Google-owned site has come under fire for allowing videos that feature what many find offensive or violent, and for not doing enough to protect kids online. Matt Halprin's team is tasked with deciding what to allow or take down. He does so with a team of hundreds and a policy process that takes many months and outside experts. Halprin says if everyone is a little upset, he figures they've done something right.
