Whale Migration
Gray whales are one of the most commonly seen whales along the California coast. They migrate 12-thousand miles round trip every year, traveling between their winter calving lagoons in Mexico and summer feeding grounds in the Arctic.
Forty-six year whale expert, retired Orange Coast College Marine Science Professor Dennis Kelly says gray whales are about the size of a school bus, 48 feet to 52 feet long, with a very narrow head. Their name is taken from gray patches and white mottling on their dark skin.
He says the migration is often described as the longest known mammal migration and is expected to continue through April.
Kelly’s our guest on our public affairs show “Collage” which airs this evening at seven. “Collage” may also be heard anytime on www.Jazz885.org
