Rehab center owner pleads no contest in $175M billing scam
The founder of a Los Angeles sober-living facility is facing 20 years in prison for running a $175 million health care billing scam. Christopher Bathum pleaded no contest to grand theft, insurance fraud, identity theft and money laundering. Bathum owned Community Recovery of Los Angeles and drug and alcohol rehab businesses in Southern California and Colorado. Authorities say he used patients' information to obtain health insurance policies in their names, then billed insurance companies $175 million for services never provided. Authorities say he was paid about $44 million. Bathum also faces sentencing on an earlier conviction for sexually assaulting seven women patients.
